The Asian Association for Language Assessment (AALA) 2026 Annual Conference invites proposals exploring how humanistic perspectives can inform and transform contemporary assessment practices, policies, and technologies.

 

Sub themes

We invite submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following sub-themes:

 

  •  Human-Centred Assessment Design and Practice

    • Ethical, affective, and social dimensions of assessment

    • Assessment for learning and well-being

    • Teacher and learner agency in assessment

  • Standards, Fairness, and Equity in Diverse Contexts

    • Standard setting and local adaptation

    • Fairness in multilingual, multicultural, and digital assessment environments

    • Policy alignment and contextual accountability

  • Innovation and Technology in Assessment

    • Generative AI, multimodal analytics, and automated feedback

    • Adaptive and personalized assessment systems

    • Data-informed assessment literacy for teachers and learners

  • Accountability, Policy, and Public Trust

    • Accountability frameworks in educational and high-stakes assessment

    • Assessment policies and ethical governance

    • Transparency, communication, and stakeholder engagement

PRESENTATION Formats
 

Paper presentations


20 minutes (+ 5 mins Q&A)
 

  • Empirical papers: Must include rationale, theoretical framing, methods, key findings, and implications.

  • Conceptual papers: Should critically examine frameworks, policies, or emerging issues with new insights.

  • Title: Max 20 words.

  • Abstract: Max 300 words.

  • Accepted paper proposals will be considered for both oral and poster formats, with the final assignment confirmed via email in the official Acceptance Letter.


 

Poster presentations

 

Size: A1 (841 x 594 mm)

  • Platform for sharing work-in-progress, pilot studies, or innovative practices.

  • Presenters discuss work during scheduled sessions.

  • Empirical/Conceptual: Same abstract (300 words) and title (20 words) requirements as papers.

  • Posters must be printed and brought to the venue by the presenters themselves.


 

Symposia


90 minutes (min. 15 mins discussion)

 

  • Features 3 to 4 papers addressing a single theme.

  • Must include a moderator and, if possible, an independent discussant.

  • Proposal (Max 800 words):

    • Theme overview and goals

    • 150-word abstracts for each paper

    • Names/roles of moderator/discussant

    • Planned time allocation


 

STUDENT AWARDS & EVALUATION
 

AALA Student Awards
 

  • All single-authored student submissions are automatically considered. For multi-authored submissions, all authors must be full-time students at the time of submission to be eligible for the two awards.

  • Applicants must indicate student status by ticking the following statement in the Submission Form:

    • “All authors of this abstract are full-time graduate students currently enrolled in Master’s or Doctoral programs.”

  • Proof of enrolment may be requested.

  • Winners will receive a certificate, waived registration for the main and pre-conference workshops, and an invitation to the conference banquet.

Evaluation Criteria

​

All proposals will be double reviewed based on the following criteria:

  • Significance and contribution to language assessment research or practice

  • Relevance to the conference theme and sub-themes

  • Rigor of research design and theoretical grounding

  • Clarity of argumentation and implications
